Reel Geek’s Review: “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates”

MikeandDaveposter

In 2013, brothers Mike and Dave Stangle needed to find dates for their cousins wedding. To get said dates they put out an ad on Craig’s List which went viral, earning them spots on the Today show and other shows, and even a book and movie deal.  This movie is the result of that deal.

In the movie version, Mike and Dave are played by Zac Efron and Adam Devine (Workaholics, Pitch Perfect), two crazy, party loving bros of brothers, who always find a way to ruin any family gathering ever with their shenanagins.  Their parents, played by Stephen Root (Dodgeball, Office Space), and Stephanie Faracy (The Great Outdoors) have grown tired of said shenanagins, so for their sister Jeannie’s wedding (played by Sugar Lyn Beard of voice acting for Beyblade and Sailor Moon fame)  they need to find dates, hence the title of the movie.

Just like in real life, they put out an ad on Craig’s List, which goes viral and leads to tv time.  While they’re looking for nice girls to take on this wedding, they get scammed by two party girls Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza-Parks and Rec, Dirty Grandpa) and Alice (Anna Kendrick-Pitch Perfect) into accompanying them on this destination wedding to Hawaii, and hijinks ensue.

While yes, this is a highly dumb comedy, I had a blast with it, laughing almost the entire way throughout the movie.   The jokes landed 9 out of 10 times,  which is more than I can say for some other comedies I’ve seen this year.   It does have a bit of that raunchy gross-out humor as these types of comedies tend to have, but I’m a fan of that stuff, and it’s done well here in this movie.      Zac Efron and Adam Devine have great comedic timing and chemistry together, and these types of movies have really been where we get to see Efron shine in movies as of late, and it works for him.   It’s also great to see a different comedic side of Anna Kendrick, whom we know is hilarious from Pitch Perfect, and her own tweets and appearance on Lip Sync Battles, but her role  in this movie is unlike what I’ve seen from her before, and it’s nice to see a different side of her acting range.

The only real complaint I have about the movie is in the casting of Adam Devine and Aubrey Plaza, they were both great in the movie, but it’s also the same types of roles I’ve seen the two of them playing for years now.  Him, the dumb frat bro type, and her, the sarcastic, quick witted, snarky young woman.  I know that there has to be more range to them than that, Aubrey Plaza especially, who I first saw and immediately liked in Judd Apatow’s Funny People, and then saw her on Parks and Rec she’s been stuck in that April Ludgate-Dwyer esque role since then.  She does it well, but I want to see more from her in movies.

All in all, it’s a hilarious movie, not going to win any awards, but there are worse ways to spend an hour and some change at the movie theater doing.    4 out 5 Stars.    Til next time, be sure to Keep it Reel.
