Food Geek Review: Chic-A-Sea

This has to be some of the best fast food I’ve ever had, also in the most unlikely of locations I’ve ever gotten food from.  Nestled inside a small section of a church is Newport News, Virginia’s hidden gem, Chic-A-Sea.

The best way to describe this place is like take Chick-Fil-A, and crank it up to 11.   It’s not the most spacious of restaurants, just a tiny box just about in the church hallway as you’re walking in, but the food that you get has a bigger taste than anything you’ve ever had before.   My girlfriend introduced me to this place as well, as a long time Hampton native she knows all of the best local spots, and this definitely is one of the best spots.

At her brother’s recommendation I got the Big Chick sandwich, a fried chicken sandwich that makes Chick Fil-A’s look like a McChicken in comparison.   Also, I had to get their corn fritters, and for my drink I got their Wild Cherry soda.

Let’s start off by talking about the Wild Cherry drink.  It was the perfect soda to go along with my meal, the sweet cherry flavor filling my tastebuds with a fruity, sweet concoction with a zip, like a carbonated melted Icee.   Just fantastic.

Their take on the Corn Fritters are just as good as Smitty’s that I talked about the other day.  Smitty’s wins out though on account of dipping sauces to go with the fritters.

But let’s talk about the main course, this Big Chick sandwich.  It truly lives up to the name, a fried chicken sandwich on steroids.   The sandwich itself is huge, and the seasonings of the chicken just blend together with the bun for one amazing meal.  When I go to Chick Fil-A and get a sandwich I need to order two of them despite the price, to get full because they’re good, but not that filling by themselves.  This sandwich on the other hand, if you’re not hungry enough you won’t be able to finish this by yourself, no matter how hard you try.    But, it ‘s so good, you’ll make that attempt I’m sure.

The best part of all this is all of this is the prices.  The Big Chick combo is only $4.99, and the Corn Fritters, just $2.49.  And everything else on the menu is priced just as such, you get a lot of bang for your buck here at Chic-A-Sea.    I’ll be moving up to Hampton in the near future, and I look forward to becoming a regular at this amazing Newport News hotspot of fried chicken and fried chicken sandwiches.
