Wrestling Geek’s Smack Talk 4.18.17.

Smackdown tonight starts out with Charlotte Flair, giving her mind to the WWE Universe, and maybe reintroducing herself to fans who haven’t been watching Raw the last year or so.

She just got here, but she already wants a title shot for Naomi’s Smackdown women’s title. Naomi answers her challenge, saying she’s never scared, and goes right after her.

Shane comes out to make this an official match, but this won’t be a title match. She has to earn her spot. If she wins tonight, she’ll face Naomi next week for the title.   Post match they keep fighting, this could be a great rivalry.

Backstage, Natalya, Carmella, and Tamina are arguing backstage with Shane about Charlotte getting a title opportunity already, until Natalya has a plan, new faction maybe?

Match 1- #1 Contenders Match

Dolph Ziggler vs Erick Rowan vs Jinder Mahal vs Mojo Rawley vs Luke Harper vs Sami Zayn

If I was booking this match, I’d have Sami Zayn or Luke Harper go over, but alas I’m just a fan, so it’ll probably be like Mojo Rawley or something.

Bit of a cluster at first, most of these guys aren’t quite championship material in my book, if anything these guys should have been feuding for the US Title and have AJ Styles in the WWE Championship picture.

Luke Harper does get an impressive Suicide Dive x 2 on the guys outside, which was pretty awesome. If he doesn’t win tonight, he will be a future champ mark my words.

Everyone in this match gets the time to get a few good moves in, and the crowd is behind all these guys, even Ziggler somehow.

Sami Zayn nearly has the match won, but he’s held in ththe corner by two men in white, the Bollywood Boyz from 205 Live, who are Jinder’s flunkies now it seems.  And Jinder picks up the win, did not see this coming. I guess this new look and attitude from Jinder has spoken to Vince McMahon it seems, and wants this guy as the top heel on Smackdown Live.  I’m willing to see where this goes.

Match Winner-Jinder Mahal

Match Grade-B

Post match, the Champ, Randy Orton comes out to warn Jinder about the consequences of the “prize ” he’s just won. It’s not a title in his future, but an RKO.

But before he gets that RKO, first Randy says he needs to deal with Bray Wyatt, who appears onscreen to cut another promo about their upcoming House of Horrors match. Bray says he’ll never walk out of this house.

Backstage, Baron Corbin interrupts AJ Styles interview, seems this will be the placeholder feud for the next few weeks til Payback is over. And they have a match set later tonight.

Charlotte Flair gets welcomed backstage by Natalya, Tamina, and Carmella, before she comes out for her match with Naomi.  Pretty sure they’ll be getting involved in this matchup.

Match 2-Charlotte Flair vs Naomi

This was a great switch, Charlotte had feuded with the top women on Raw as much as possible, now it’s time to see her feud with some new blood.

Charlotte and Naomi go right at it, no time wasted here.  Smackdown’s women’s division just got a whole lot more interesting.  Charlotte is essentially owning this match though.  I was hoping that Naomi would have a decent title run, but she needs to step her game up to compete with Charlotte.

Naomi isn’t going down without a fight though, she’s getting her moves in, it’s just not enough to put down the Queen.

Charlotte counters the Rear View attack with her own Natural Selection finisher, and picks up the win here tonight.  Earning her title shot next week.

Match Winner-Charlotte

Match Grade-A

Backstage, Natalya and friends have nothing to say as Charlotte walks past them, wooing in triumph.

Match 3- The Colons vs American Alpha

This match is a chance for American Alpha to get some payback on the former Shining Stars, who attacked them last week in their Smackdown debut.

This is a new side of Primo and Epico, pretty brutal I have to say, and I like it.  Very much an evenly fought match tonight, but in the end The Colons pick up the win, clean.

Match Winners-The Colons

Match Grade-B

I love the new packaging for Kevin Owens, “The Face of America” and its time for the Face of America Open Challenge

Match 4-Kevin Owens vs Gary Gandy

Great heel work by Kevin announcing himself in the ring, before destroying this guy, its not pretty, but it’s effective.

Match Winner-Kevin Owens

Match Grade-C

Post match, Kevin Owens taunts Jericho before taking a seat at the commentary booth for the main event.

Match 5-Baron Corbin vs AJ Styles

Corbin and AJ square up as the match gets underway, Corbin gets the upper hand at first, but AJ gets some vicious kicks in as well.

This is a really fast paced matchup and I love it. Baron Corbin is really on his way to being a main event player, mark my words.  AJ Styles is just too quick, too smart for Corbin though.

Hard hitting affair from both men, one of the best matches I’ve seen with Corbin in his career. He’s come a long way since the squash matches of NXT.

Near the end AJ attempts to hit Baron with a Styles Clash on the outside, but that’s countered and AJ goes flying into Kevin Owens. The match goes on outside, but AJ knocks Corbin into the crowd and slides back into the ring just in time to beat the 10 count for the win.

Match Winner-AJ Styles

Match Grade-A

Great show tonight overall, some really good matches in here tonight, this Shakeup seems to have helped benefit both shows, despite what it seemed like at first.
