Wrestling Geek’s Smack Talk 5.23.17

The Age of the Maharajah begins tonight. I’m excited to see where this goes, even though he was just a jobber before a month ago, anything is possible here.  And he legit feels like a top guy, unlike others Vince tries to push down our throats.

And our top heel gets a top heel worthy entrance here tonight, red carpet, limo, suit and tie, the whole deal.  Great stuff.

After this, we have the Commissioner of Smackdown Live, Shane McMahon, coming to address the WWE Universe. Talking about the Money In The Bank ppv event next month.

First order of business, as expected, Randy Orton will get his rematch against Jinder Mahal, in his hometown of St. Louis.

Next up, the men who will be in the Money In The Bank match.  AJ Styles comes out first, to no surprise, followed by Baron Corbin, Sami Zayn, Dolph Ziggler, and…

Kevin Owens comes out, the face of America, though Shane says he’s not going to be in the match, but this man is, and that man is…

Shinsuke Nakamura! The king of strong style! Ok Smackdown, you have my interest.

Kevin Owens is upset that he’s not included , and I get it. He should be in there, not Dolph Ziggler of all people. He won before, but he was good before.   Might as well have James Ellsworth in the MITB.

Kevin Owens is let into the match after all, which makes this even better. Baron Corbin thinks he should just be handed the briefcase now, as these other guys are no competition to him.

AJ reminds us that Smackdown is the house that AJ Styles built, which I’m inclined to agree with. He’s one of the best in WWE today.

Baron Corbin and Sami get into it, as do Dolph and Kevin. Ziggler reminds us that he used to be a credible champ at one point, which, ok, we get it, move on, show us that you’re that damn good, Talking is cheap, Actions are worth more.

Shane sets up a match for later tonight of Baron Corbin and Sami Zayn in a Backlash rematch, and a main event of AJ and Nakamura teaming up against Owens and Ziggler.

Match 1-Becky and Charlotte vs Natalya and Carmella

The Welcoming Committee has been on a roll since they’ve formed, winning every match against the unlikely alliance of Becky, Charlotte, and Naomi.

Tonight it’s two against two, Becky and Carmella locking up first. Even match so far, and we go into commercial break, but the action still goes on! I’m happy to see them bringing back the split screen commercial break again that they used in the first live Smackdown show last year.   Does slightly suck, because I’m watching this on dvr, so I could skip the commercials, but small price to pay I guess.

Carmella and Natalya start getting the upper hand, and dominating Becky, Charlotte needs to get in there.  And she does in an epic fashion.  Nearly gets the win here too just then.

Becky’s back in now, but so is Carmella, who taps out quickly to Becky’s Disarm-her submission hold. She really is the weak link of the Committee, but I’m glad to see Team NCB get a win here tonight.

Match Winner-Becky Lynch and Charlotte

Match Grade-C

Match 2-Sami Zayn vs Baron Corbin

It’s a rematch from the other night at Backlash, and a quick one at that, as Sami hits Baron with a roll up like 20 seconds into the damn thing.  Baron is pissed at this, and starts beating the hell out of Zayn, basically a violent temper tantrum.

Taking this out into the crowd, very much like in the WWE 2K17 video game no less.  Will Sami even make it to Money in the Bank now?

Match Winner-Sami Zayn

Match Grade-F
Backstage, AJ and Nakamura meet for the first time in WWE, and this will be the first time ever they’ve tagged together.  This should be a great main event.

Up next it’s time for another Breezango Fashion Files skit. I love these things, wish they got the titles at Backlash.  From this we get two singles matches tonight, Tyler Breeze vs one USO, and Fandango vs another later tonight.

Now  it’s time for Jinder Mahal’s Punjabi celebration. I love it, there’s a full Indian dance troupe, and it’s an  impressive and colorful entrance for The Singh Brothers and the new WWE Champion.  I also love his new entrance theme too. He’s really improved since 3MB.

He says that we can boo him all we want, but it doesn’t matter because 1.3 million people in India are celebrating that he is WWE Champion.  I like it, but in the same sense, why haven’t we had a Black WWE Champion yet?  But I get that Vince has a deal with India right now, so here we are.

Match 3/4 Jey Uso vs Tyler Breeze/Fandango vs Jimmy Uso

Can’t even think of the last time Tyler Breeze has been in solo action.  I’ve been a fan since NXT, hope this is good.

Jey gets on the mic, says they shouldn’t even be fighting them, they beat them already. Breeze hits Jey with a rollup, one two three, it’s a win.

The other match starts, and Breeze distracts Jey on the outside, and then Fandango hits Jimmy with a roll up, one two three, this is over.

Post match, Breezango ask The Usos for a title rematch, which The Usos accept.

Match 5-The Usos vs Breezango

Smackdown Tag Team Title Match

Usos coming off strong as we get this underway, injuring the lower back of Breeze. And just double team attacking him, leaving this match as one sided as the other two matches were.

Breeze finally tags in Fandango, and he’s on fire right now, so close to getting the titles right here. Usos hit em with a Superkick Party like they’re he Young Bucks, but that’s not enough to put Breezango down just yet.

Fandango goes to the top, so does Jimmy though, he fights off Jimmy goes for a top rope attack, but so does Jey who lands on him seconds after Fandango lands on his brother, and 1-2-3 The Usos retain their titles.

Match Winners-The Usos

Match(es) Grade-B
Backstage, Natalya asks Shane for a title shot against Naomi, but so does Carmella, Becky, Tamina, and Charlotte. Shane says the answer to this will be a fatal 5 way match next week, the winner getting the number one contender spot, and facing Naomi at Money in the Bank.

I’d rather they have just done a women’s MITB ladder match myself, that’d be best for business, but should still be a good match.

Match 6-Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles vs Dolph Ziggler and Kevin Owens

Some top talent here in this main event, and they’re actually giving this match time, about 30 minutes left on the clock, so we should get a 5 star main event hopefully.

Dolph Ziggler and AJ Styles are up first.  I’ve noticed this week that there are a lot of lock ups early on in matches, nearly everyone starts out that way, like they’re just then going over the match with each other, playing parts on the fly maybe.

It’s not too long before we see Nakamura vs Owens. Dream match here. Nakamura very much in control here. Owens is very much a fighter though, and gets his shots in there, tagging in Ziggler, whom is intent on getting revenge against The Artist, Shinsuke for their match at Backlash.

He tags Owens back in who resumes his beating of Shinsuke.   And then it’s back to Dolph, some great teamwork between these heels. Owens is decimating Shinsuke, but it’s not enough to end this one yet.

Eventually Nakamura gets lucky, and tricks Ziggler into slamming directly into the ringpost. Tags in AJ Styles and this is a whole new ballgame now!

Short lived game changer though, as Owens starts to grind Styles down once more like he did at Backlash.  AJ still fights on though.

Ziggler and Styles now, Styles still the better wrestler of the two men, so it’s no contest here. A double hot tag is made and now we have Shinsuke Nakamura and Kevin Owens in the ring! Nakamura has the advantage this go around though.

Total chaos now, finishers everywhere, but in the end Shinsuke hits his finisher on KO, and your winners tonight are AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura!

Match Winners-AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura

All in all decent show tonight, I like that the main event wasn’t rushed, but still I want to see more superstars get their chance to shine. Where’s American Alpha? Where’s Tye Dillinger? Where’s Luke Harper for that matter?

I liked how Raw worked last night, 10 matches overall, and nearly everyone got a chance to do something? Here it seems like half the roster wasn’t there.  It’s improving but we still need and deserve better from WWE.
